"The Heart of the Philippines" is a collection of Photographs based around the real heart of the country which is the people. They are always quick with a smile and in my experience would give you the shirt off their backs. A lot of people believe that “everything happens for a reason” and I am starting to believe that this just might be true. When I first went to the Philippines in 2006 I did so simply to take a holiday. At first I was horrified at what I saw there. I thought I knew what to expect but until you actually set foot in these places you can’t possibly imagine it. The conditions are such that it simply is not possible to imagine just how bad they are and that people can be living there. Not only living there but some spend their entire lives there. These places are such that even ordinary everyday Filipinos (middle class) have never ventured into them. There truly is a magic to be found there in the Philippines and that magic is in each and very person you meet. It's not the places but the people or to be correct, the hearts of the people. I want to highlight the Philippines that most people never ever got to see. The Philippines to most people are the tourist brochures and the resorts, the great diving sites or maybe the colourful nightlife choices and beautiful foods. It was during my time there that I got to know the Filipino people first hand. I met so many young people who don’t have any hope for their future. They live in shanties in terrible surroundings and cannot afford to receive higher educations. Many of the children are living without clothing or a bed to sleep in. You can see however from my photos that they are always quick with a smile. I believe that by hanging their images on our walls, we are sharing the true "Heart of the Philippines" with the world around us, and by doing so, can benefit not only their lives, but also influence our lives as well.
