In April 2007, me and 15 other guys took a private rafting trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. For 18 days we rowed our way through classic canyon scenery and navigated endless adrenaleine-rushing rapids. We took hikes up narrow side-canyons and out to impossible waterfalls emerging from the sides of cliffs. Biggest surprise of the experience: the water in the river is COLD! It emerges from Glen Canyon Dam just upstream at 46 degrees Fahrenheit, and barely warms ten degrees by the end of the trip. So you can be sweating and baking in the sun one moment, and shivering uncontrollably after the next rapid. Second biggest surprise is how cracked your fingertips get after days in the dry desert combined with constantly grabbing sandy boat lines and straps. A tin of Bag Balm is absolutely a must!
